Excellence in the Millennium Award 2018

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

The 15th edition of the Excellence in the Millennium Award was held on Monday, the 26th March 2018 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

This is an annual event in which we recognize and honor the top ten outstanding students from the Grade 9 exams.

On our request, West African Examination Council (WAEC) provides us annually with a list of the top ten outstanding students for the year.

The award was instituted by the Bank to help promote education and encourage academic excellence in the Gambia. The awards come in four segments:

              1. D5000.00 and a computer tablet and certificate of excellence to each of the top ten outstanding students

              2. D10, 000.00 to the school that produce the candidate with the best results.

              3. D20, 000.00 to the school with the highest number of awardees.

              4. D5,000.00 to the most outstanding student

The occasion was graced by the Honorable Minister for Basic and Secondary Education-Mrs. Claudia Cole; the Managing Director of Trust Bank Ltd-Mr. Ibrahima Salla; the representative of the Permanent Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education-Ms. Lala Jaiteh, Representative of the Head of National Office for WAEC-Mr. Bokar Secka ;the Chairman of Conference of Principals-Mr. Muhammed Jabbi and the Regional Director of Education (Region 1)-Mr. Ebrima Saidy.

The Managing Director of Trust Bank Ltd, Mr. Ibrahima Salla said in his speech marking the occasion that “the purpose of this event is to help promote quality education, and to also acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of these hard working and deserving girls and boys.

He outlined the fact that other schools are now making the list of awardees which shows that the competition is getting more intense.

He said that Trust Bank will encourage excellence through the Excellence in the Millennium Award and congratulated the awardees for their hard work and dedication.

The Managing Director used the occasion to advise the awardees about the choices they make in their lives.

“Life in general is made up of an infinite number of choices. We make choices all the time, from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. Most of the decisions are small and only slightly impactful, but the big decisions that can change your lives forever are indeed tough to make.

Take a moment to weigh the choices you need to make in your lives, be it in your studies; in your families or in your friendships.

What you must begin to acknowledge is that the choices you make can bring you CLOSER TO or take you FURTHER AWAY from your dreams or goals.

If you choose to confront the options before you with courage, confidence and determination, you open yourself to a fulfilling path of your own design, filled with numerous possibilities.

You cannot achieve excellence in your lives if you do not manage yourselves. You cannot manage yourselves if you do not manage your choices. Manage your choices, and you will manage your lives”.

He went on to challenge the awardees to embrace excellence.

“If you declare Excellence as your life goal, then every area of your lives will be an opportunity for excellence to show up. Your academic results would be excellent, your relationships would be excellent, and your conducts would be excellent.

That is what we need in you as the future generation in order to achieve our aspirations in our quest to shape the NEW GAMBIA”.

On her part, the honorable Minister for Basic and Secondary Education-Mrs. Claudiana Ayo Taylor-Cole said that “education is a tool for sustainable development and a means to eradicating poverty. Therefore, any effort aimed at the attainment of these goals should be highly appreciated and vigorously pursued”.

She underscored the fact that the provision of education is largely the responsibility of government but the funding aspect of it remains a huge challenge. She therefore thanked Trust Bank for such a laudable initiative and implores the private sector in general to emulate Trust Bank Ltd to help achieve our national goals.

On his part, the representative of the Head of National Office for WAEC-Mr. Bokar Secka said “by committing yourselves to sponsoring such outstanding students, Trust Bank is contributing its quota in advancing the cause of education in the Gambia”.

Mr. Secka went on to clarify the criteria used to determine the top ten outstanding students which has caused so much confusion recently.

He said that “other candidates may have had aggregate six (6) in the Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) but the average total score of each candidate were used to determine the top ten”.

The following students were the recipients of the awards:

Student name School

TABKA

The donation was part of the commemoration of our 20th anniversary since the incorporation of the bank in 1997.

TANKA

The presentation was attended by the Honorable Minister of Health & Social Welfare-Mrs Saffie Lowe Ceesay; the Director of Health Services-Mr Mamady Cham; Mental Health Program Coordinator-Mr Pa Sonko; the Officer-in-Charge of Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital-Mr. Foday Jawla; staffs of the Hospital and Trust Bank.

TANKA

In presenting the items, Mr Ibrahima Salla, Managing Director of Trust Bank Ltd expressed warm gratitude towards the management of Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital for giving Trust Bank the opportunity to contribute yet again to make a difference in the lives of the vulnerable in our society.

TANKA

Mr Salla added that “In view of our status as a proudly Gambian Bank, Trust Bank has always seen events like this as having far-reaching objectives and all of them linked to our Corporate Social Responsibility objective of bringing hope where there is despair.

TANKA

Our Corporate Social Responsibility program is grounded on the principles of sharing and caring, and we believe this donation is a great way to give back to our communities. We are also aware and appreciate that our customers from all corners of the Gambia, and even ourselves as employees of Trust Bank together with our family members might at some point, directly or indirectly benefit from the health services offered by Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital.

Mental illness is one of the most critical health problems. It affect more people, require more prolonged treatment, cause more suffering to the families of the afflicted, waste more of our human resources, and constitute more financial drain upon both public and personal finances.

Distinguished Ladies and gentleman, please allow me to remind ourselves that the presentation today, is just a continuation of the work that Trust Bank has been doing for this hospital.  It does not only include consumable items, but the love and generosity of the Trust Bank family to the residents of Tanka Tanka.

It is a continuation of a journey which started couple of years ago with the strategic objective of complimenting governments’ efforts of transforming the lives of more people with mental health problems in this country.

To achieve this, we need to drive a fundamental culture shift in our society; a culture that have long neglected the mentally ill in our society. This neglect must end, if our nation is to live up to its own standards of compassion and dignity and achieve the maximum use of its manpower”.

TANKA

Mr. Salla noted that mental health service delivery all over the world and the Gambia in particular is still a far cry from being satisfactory compared to physical health. In spite of all the challenges, we have achieved a lot together as Gambians.TANKA

“We at Trust Bank are immensely proud to celebrate our 20th anniversary with patients’ and staffs here whilst we also acknowledge, through a donation, the role that the Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital plays in the lives of many Gambians across the country.
