“What you must begin to acknowledge is that the choices you make can bring you CLOSER TO or take you FARTHER AWAY from your dreams or goals.  If you choose to confront the options before you with courage, confidence and determination, you open yourself to a fulfilling path of your own design, filled with numerous possibilities. You cannot achieve excellence in your lives if you do not manage yourselves. You cannot manage yourselves if you do not manage your choices. Manage your choices, and you will manage your lives. If you declare Excellence as your life goal, then every area of your lives will be an opportunity for excellence to show up. Your academic results would be excellent, your relationships would be excellent, and your conducts would be excellent. That is what we need in you as the future generation in order to achieve our aspirations in our quest to shape our collective future”.

Below is the full text of Trust Bank Managing Director’s statement.

Good morning to you all and welcome to the 16th edition of the Excellence in the new Millennium Award Ceremony wherein we recognize and honor the top ten outstanding students from the Grade 9 exams.

It is with immense pleasure that I congratulate all our prize winners, as well as those who narrowly missed out for putting up such hard work in their educational pursuits resulting in excellent performances.

We are particularly pleased that the Honorable Minister for Basic & Secondary Education-Mrs. Claudiana Cole has agreed to grace this auspicious occasion and also to present the prizes for the second consecutive year. You are most welcome Honorable Minister.

We appreciate the links that we have with your ministry and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved for the invaluable role they have played over the years in supporting this event.

The purpose of this event is to help promote quality education and to also acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of these hard working and deserving girls and boys.

We are grateful to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for always providing us with a list of the top ten outstanding students for the year.

Ladies and gentlemen, before going in detail into today’s event, I would like to take this opportunity to pay special tribute to past students who have benefited from these awards. Allow me to acknowledge that most of them are now doing extremely well in their careers and have become key members of our society.

Please join me in congratulating them for their hard work and dedication and say a big ‘Thank You’ to their parents for the moral support and guidance. Your efforts have not gone in vain.

Madam Honorable Minister, we have been informed that, the total number of candidates that entered for the 2018 GABECA examination was 23,616 students representing 273 schools countrywide. Out of the total candidates that sat the exams 10,807 were males and 12,809 were females.  Of this figure, 19 students scored aggregate 6 including the top ten that we are awarding today.

Madam Honorable Minister, in the history of this competition, girls excel consistently higher than boys and that trend has been amply manifested today. I am pleased to report that eight out of the ten awards for this edition of the Excellence in the Millennium Award will go to the female candidates. Our girls have worked so hard to realize their potentials and have done well as a result.

Madam Honorable Minister, on the award list, two candidates represents Presentation of Mary Basic Cycle School and all the other schools including St. Therese’s Upper Basic School, St. Peter’s Upper Basic School, Anne Marie Javouhey, Yalding Upper Basic School, Tallinding Upper Basic School, Kotu Upper Basic School, Old Yundum Upper Basic School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner Upper Basic School are represented by only one candidate.

The results show that the competition is getting more intense and a stark contrast to when it used to be dominated by few schools. We have recently seen other schools such as ABC Upper Basic School, Kaur Upper Basic School, Sangajorr Basic Cycle School, Anne Marie Javouhey, Yalding Upper Basic School, Kunkujang Keitaya Upper Basic School and Old Yundum Upper Basic School making the list.

It is without doubt that all of you girls and boys have strived to do your best in order to be a part of this occasion and I believe that represents the true spirit of this award ceremony.

I would like today’s celebration of achievement to also serve as an inspiration, especially to those young girls and boys out there who may have resigned themselves to a prize-less level of performance.

It would be a mistake to see events like this one as only a celebration of the top achievers and award recipients. Today is very much about each boy and girl here taking stock of the results of their labor, attitude and motivation. Each of you here today needs to be asking yourself about the way forward. You have the potentials and the opportunity to be the recipients of future awards.

Today is about affirmation and seeking inspiration. It is about the present as much as it is an acknowledgement of the past. But most importantly, it is about the future. And the power each of us has to create new possibilities from this moment going forward.

Girls and boys, I would like to talk to you a bit about the CHOICE’s you make in your lives.

Life in general is made up of an infinite number of choices. We make choices all the time, from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. Most of the decisions are small and only slightly impactful, but the big decisions that can change your lives forever are indeed tough to make.

Take a moment to weigh the choices you need to make in your lives, be it in your studies; in your families or in your friendships. What you must begin to acknowledge is that the choices you make can bring you CLOSER TO or take you FARTHER AWAY from your dreams or goals.

That is what we need in you as the future generation in order to achieve our aspirations in our quest to shape our collective future.

And finally, to the parents and guardians here present. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in your children’s education. Continue to provide them with the enabling environment, the advices, the guidance, the mentorship. For after all we as parents and guardians have a profound role to play in the development of the young under our care.
